We hope you had a wonderful 2011 and that this year has been a great start for all of you!

We have had a start of a beautiful new year and here are the pictures to prove it...

Knotts Berry Farm!!

Unfortunately the ride that Hali'a always begs to go on was off-limits to kids her size (it was a 42" and taller ride and Hali'a's only 34") but she did get to go on a few which made her so happy!

Since Hali'a is so shy around others and especially enormous cartoon characters we were surprised when she volunteered during the music session of Charlie Brown's hoe down show!

We ended the Knotts Berry day as a Pink Hotdog:)

On Martin Luther King's day we went to Tom's farm and met up with the Gonzales and Mautz ohana and had lots of fun...

Even when we aren't out and about doing something fun we still have a blast at home...

Our little ohana had a wonderful 2011!
Our family was blessed with La'akea in March and we continue to count the blessings we receive each day with Hali'a!

We had a wonderful year and it was great to reflect on the blessings we've been given.

Hali'a is a very special child to us. We are so thankful to Heavenly Father for blessing us with her here on earth. She is amazing and we were so happy to be spending her 3rd birthday at the magical world of Disneyland (thanks Megan).
It was so fun to have Grammy and Bumpa there too! Nanz and Papa, we wished you could have came with us, but we'll spend next years birthday with you:)

Hawaii Vacation

Our vacation in Hawaii was WONDERFUL!!! We were able to spend time with family, enjoy the warm weather, and relax in paradise!

We all enjoyed our vacation even though Jon was only there for one week. Pictures will be posted soon so stay tuned!!

I love Molokai so much and I am so glad that Jon loves it there as well. We are looking forward to moving to Hawaii next year and being so much closer to the beautiful place that I call home!

Children's Orchard

I forgot to mention in my last post that I got that great deal from a store called Children's Orchard. It's a second hand store so some of it is lightly used but sometimes they have things that still have original price tags on them! I'm sure they have stores in other states so check out their website and see if there's one near you! Sign up for the MOMS club and they email you a $5 coupon for your first visit. You can also sell old clothes to them--but the clothes has to look pretty great and have no stains or smells. They also buy used toys and other baby items like strollers, carriages, bouncers, etc... When you sign up for the MOMS club make sure you click on the box saying you'd like the deals emails they send out. They don't send a lot of junk mail. In fact, I've only gotten two emails from them since signing up about 2 months ago- one had the $5 coupon and the other was to let me know about their "fill a bag for $5" event.

On Saturday morning I went to a local children's store while they had their summer deal:
"fill a bag for $5"
It was FABULOUS!!!

I got 21 items of baby clothes and shoes for Hali'a and La'akea for $5!!
That is about 24 cents per item!

I love deals like these, especially when it's a deal for children things!!
Keep an eye out for your local stores that do this!!!

Our La'akea is now 4 1/2 months old and weighing 11 pounds, 10 ounces. She's growing quickly and still making funny faces. She sleeps 7-9 hours every night unless her teeth are bothering her. Yes, she's teething...CRAZY!
She loves to be tickled and loves when people make funny faces at her. She also loves to sit and watch Hali'a dance and play. Her favorite food is milk (haven't started solids yet) and her favorite thing to do is be held!

Here's the happs with Hali'a:

She'll be 3 in November but if you ask her she's either 12, 16 or 19. Sometimes you'll get the answer, "16 and 19". She weighs 24 pounds and 8 ounces so she's still on the skinny side. She loves singing, dancing, watching movies and doing anything with La'akea. She's hilarious and says some pretty crazy things. We're pretty sure she's going to be a smart butt as a teenager so wish us luck:)

This is her "Izzy hat", her favorite pirate on the Disney Jr show, Jake and the Neverland Pirates. She MUST wear it when she watches the show and she'll never put it on unless the show is on:)

I taught her how to fold the little rags/kitchen towels and she got it down after watching just once! I will never fold a small towel again:) Can't wait til she's big enough to fold all the towels:)

It perfectly shows how quickly they're growing; Hali'a's pajama tops/bottoms are all too short and her hair is crazier than ever and La'akea's bustin' out the buttons on her clothes already! Geez we need to get to the store/hair dressers :)

4th of July

I don't know if you know this, but, 4th of July is kind of a big deal around here!
It's the one day of the year that the city of Buena Park allows fireworks and boy do the city residents take advantage of it!

IT'S A FREAKING WAR ZONE!

I feel like I walked right onto a civil war scene in hollywood because it's smokey and loud and the lights are amazing!! No wonder it's Jon's favorite holiday!! When we started dating at BYU he told me about all these 4th of July celebrations but I know now exactly what he means when he says that it's "legit"!

This 4th of July was fun for all of us. We went swimming in the Valenzuela's pool with friends, jumped in the bounce house at Russ and Cindy's house, I sang at the Shield's gathering, and witnessed the huge firework show that Russ and Troy Smits put on. It was AWESOME!
I didn't get much pictures of the girls but my friend Laura did so as soon as I get those pics I'll post em. For now, all the pics I have is of my 2 girls pooped out from the day's adventure!

We are counting down the days 'til next year's celebration:)

For Father's Day, Kenny took Jon out to Father's office, a bar with AWESOME burgers.

Jon had never been there and the place was on Food Network's 'Best thing I ever ate' show so he was excited to go, and apparently a lot of other people were too...

Jon said the burger was good and he enjoyed the experience with his dad!

Update on the Hawaiian Jenks girls

So I've been a slacker with the photo taking but it's because our camera broke about a month ago. It's pretty sad but we'll be fixing it real soon. By next week, I promise!
Well, since the camera broke a lot has been going on...

The happs in Laakea's life:
She's now 3 months old and weighing 10 pounds and is 22 inches long. She is almost turning over from back to belly and LOVES to chat. She loves when people stare at her in the face and chat with her.
She is eating 3.5oz every 2-3hours so she's probably in a growth spurt! She sleeps about 8 hours every night, falling asleep around 9:30ish and getting up around 6ish. Then she eats, burps and falls right back to sleep on her own until around 8:30.
She's a FANTASTIC baby! She rarely cries and is smiling a lot!!!

The happs in Hali'a's life:
Hali'a is 2years and 8months old. She's still in the 20 pounder category as far as weight goes and still pretty short. She is so brilliantly smart and funny. She has great memorization skills and taught herself how to count to 14. It's crazy how fast she learns! She has so much personality and everyone keeps telling me to put her in movies or commercials but I don't really know how to do all that stuff.
If you ask her how old she is her usual answers are 16 or 19. She loves being a princess and also loves to act out scenes from Tangled. She's definitely a Jenks girl cause she can speak verbatim the lines from movies she watches. Her favorite lines include:
"Who are you, and how did you find me?" -Tangled
"You killed my father" "No Buzz, I am your father!" -Toy Story 2
"Welcome to Sunny side, folks" -Toy Story 3
She also loves to sing songs from movies or the morning tv shows she watches (Jake and the Neverland Pirates, Micky Mouse Clubhouse, Chuggington).
She's got sass and spunk and we love her to pieces!

The happs in the parents life:
Same old, same old. We get a few surprises here and there when Laa will poop up and out of her diaper but we guess she's just spicing up our lives:)
Jon and both work for L.A. Records and are still living in our ghetto fabulous apartment. We teach Sunday school every Sunday and generally just like to hangout with family.

Extreme Couponing...starting off small!

So I've watched one episode of Extreme Couponing on TLC. I thought it was great saving money and I would love to save money too but it's kind of hard to be that "extreme" when I don't have the storage space to really stock up on goods like those people on TV do.
I decided that I would start my couponing trial round for the next month. I will only buy the things that my family needs and some goodies but only in small amounts to see if it's actually worth the time and effort. If it turns out to be worth it then I might continue on a little bigger scale and maybe help my in-laws with their year storage supply :)

My first couponing trip:
(2 gallons of Rite Aid ice cream not shown in picture)
I paid only $10 for 13 items. Not bad at only 77cents/item.

Jon got in on the couponing action by helping clip the coupons I needed. I didn't even ask, he was just a sweetheart and did it!

Today is my CVS trip where I'll get 2 manual toothbrushes, 1 power toothbrush, 2 mouth washes, 2 deodorants, and one tube of toothpaste... 8 items total and I'll only pay $1.

On May 1, 2011 we were able to bless La'akea at church. It was a special occasion because all of Jon's brothers were able to be a part of her blessing. Along with Jon and his brothers were La'akea's two grandpa and Uncle Jeff.
We were so blessed to have family and friends come to our ward and witness the beautiful blessing Jon gave. He blessed her that she would live true for her namesakes, which includes being a light to shine for others and lead them to Christ, and also a wonderful loving person like her Great grandmother, Maren.

Hali'a LOVES La'akea!!
I was worried about Hali'a being jealous of La'akea but it turns out the actual problem is Hali'a loves her so much!
We have to keep an eye on Hali'a because she loves to try and pick up La'akea or squeeze her and hug her. Hali'a's favorite thing to do is kiss her and she kisses very hard pushing her lips so hard that it pushes La'akea's head!
We're so happy she loves her so much!

Hali'a is also a very good big sister! When La'a is crying Hali'a will run over and yell, "it's ok, I'm right here!" and try to give her a pacifier. Sometimes she will soothe La'a with her beautiful singing (which always seems to work). She also likes to brush La'a's hair and help by throwing away diapers or wiping up spit up with the burp rag.
We hope they'll be best friends while they grow up!!

On March 28, 2011 we welcomed our 2nd baby girl, La'akea Maren Jenks.
We arrived at the hospital early in the morning.

The surgery took about fifteen minutes but we were happy La'akea was perfectly healthy at 5 pounds, 10 ounces and 19 inches long!

Well, since moving into our new apartment we haven't had much excitement going on so I decided to throw a little Girls' Sushi-making party. It was fun to have a few gal friends over to talk and to enjoy sushi.

Li'a the builder

One of Hali'a's favorite things to do during play time at home is build with her foam blocks. We've built houses for her miniature dolls and little bridges. It's fun to play with her! She used to need my help building but now she's so good at building things herself. Some are very impressive (and like the mother I am, I missed those amazing "kodak moments") but here are some pictures of her little buildings...

I think her only problem now is that she doesn't have enough blocks to keep building...guess we're gonna have to look for more:)

Valentine's Day 2011

This year's Valentine's day ended up being on a Monday which made it hard to make plans for Jon and I to do something fun together. Since we knew it would be difficult we celebrated during the weekend before the actual day. We had a fun weekend together and had yummy steaks on Sunday night with his family.
On Valentine's day Jon had to work during the day and had class at night so Hali'a and I made a small sign for him to come home to:

Hali'a was very cute, she said, "Mommy, I make a Valentine day picture for me daddy!"

We spent Valentine's day still unpacking and setting up our new place. Hali'a was a big help...she helped me stack our DVDs in the shelf and unpack boxes!

Side Note: On Tuesday I put Toy Story 3 in her dvd player and let her hold it on her lap...it made it very easy for me to French braid her hair. I couldn't believe how long it's getting. It's hard to tell every day with her wonderful curls!

Country Concert

I listen to country music stations all the time up here and after being KFROG's 20th caller I won 2 tickets to their birthday bash at Morongo Casino. We left early so that Jon could visit the Pee Wee movie's dinosaur exhibit...

These things were huge! Since I have this irrational fear of dinosaurs I didn't get very close to them, which is why only Jon are in these photos:)

The opening act was Jaron and the Long Road to Love. Do you remember Jaron and Evan who sang "Crazy for this Girl"? Well, after they broke up Jaron started his own country thing. Here he is singing his number one hit, "You're beautiful, and that's beautiful to me"

My haircut 8)

Well, for weeks now I've been deciding if I should cut my hair or not. My goal was to get it back to the length it was during my hula dancing years but it's been so bothersome for me that I decided to cut it. I figured it's one less thing for me to worry or fuss about with our big move this weekend and a baby on the way.

Baby Bump and and Update

I have been really bad about taking pregnancy pictures...probably because I lost about 25 pounds during the first trimester so there wasn't any baby bump or anything. I really only started popping out til about a month ago so here's the first baby bump pictures of Baby Girl #2...

As for how the baby and I are doing....
The baby's doing great! Her heartbeat is the normal 140 beats per minute, which is what I like to hear when I go to doctor appointments:)
All her organs look great and everything is the right proportion!

As for myself, I'm not doing too great. This pregnancy has been especially rough for me physically. I got taken off of steroids immediately after confirming pregnancy so my bones and joints hurt all the time. To add to that, pregnancy comes with lots of aches and pains and recently my doctor said I have Sciatica which makes it hard--if not impossible to walk, sit, stand, or even lie down without being in horrible pain. I got some pain medication from my doctor yesterday so things have been a little easier these past couple days. Only 10 weeks or less to go and everyone's so excited for this baby! So far, since the baby is showing no complications, my doctor said I can choose to try a natural birth this time instead of a C-section so I'm excited about that!
We are all just happy that the baby is doing fine and that there's not much longer to go!

Baby #2 Update

Just a cute picture of Hali'a (that I stole from Hilarie's blog;thanks, Lala!)

Well, I'm about 25 weeks along and according to my check up last Friday everything is completely normal!! The baby's heart beat was pacing at a normal rate and working properly.

In the first trimester of pregnancy I lost 25 pounds but since my 2nd trimester I've gained 9 of those pounds back! I'm also feeling a lot better and have way more energy than before!

This baby girl moves a lot and I love feeling her. It is my favorite part of pregnancy! It's amazing to actually feel her move inside me like she's ready to run and play! Hali'a thinks it's funny to feel the baby kick her hand as well! I have a habit of pulling my shirt up and rubbing my belly anytime we are at home and I'm lying down. Now Hali'a has decided to do the same but she does it wherever we are and even when she's standing so now I'm trying to teach her not to do that. She's going to be a great big sister; we can tell she is ready to have a playmate:) In her prayers she thanks Heavenly Father for her "baby sister in mommy's belly"...it's really the cutest thing to hear:)

Jon and I are excited but haven't been able to put a name list together yet. We have the 2nd and 3rd runner-up names from when I was pregnant with Hali'a but those aren't grabbing us like they use to. I'm sure we'll figure it out though. Anyone have any suggestions?

Tomorrow is my appointment to see the Cardiologist for a fetal echo. It's like an ultrasound but it's an advanced one that allows the cardiologist to see the inner workings of the baby's body--especially the heart functions. He can check the blood flow and see if there are any holes in the baby's heart and also monitor the communication between each heart chamber. It's pretty amazing to see what he sees on the screen. What a blessing it is to be living in a time when all these technologies are available to help me and the baby!

Mahalo to all of our wonderful friends and family who've said countless prayers and have fasted on our baby girl's behalf. We love all of you and are so thankful to have you in our lives!

This year's Halloween costumes were simple and affordable. We decided to make our own costumes instead of buying them to save some money.
All together we spent around $11 for all 3 costumes.

Hali'a had to look at each candy or toy that was put in her basket.
She said, "trick or treat", then they'd drop a candy in her basket and she'd pick up what they dropped and if she liked it she said, "thank you" and they'd respond, "you're welcome; have fun!" and Hali'a would reply, "have fun!"

Hali'a loved trick or treating. We took her around our block on Halloween and she would run up the drive ways and yell, "knock-knock!!" "trick or treat!"
My favorite part was watching her that night...she's so funny! Definitely not shy when getting candy or treats!!

Now we're ready for Thanksgiving:)

Last week I sent Hali'a to the room to take a nap. Usually when she's tired she throws a fit and will fight her nap (like I'm sure many other children do), but that day she dropped her toys and walked straight into her room. I was reading in the living room and didn't hear a peep in the room so I was happy that she was so obedient that day.
After about 10 minutes of silence I thought I should check on her (just in case she was into something she shouldn't have been). I looked on my bed, cause that's usually where she'll climb up and sleep since she can't climb into her crib, but I didn't see her. I looked in the bathroom to see if she was fooling around in there but I couldn't find her. I checked under the bed cause once she took a nap under my bed and couldn't get out but she wasn't there either. Then I realized the sliding glass door was open and I got scared cause I knew she could open the screen door. All these horrible thoughts ran through my mind of finding her outside on the street or near our neighbors deadly Chihuahuas!

While standing by the door I saw her little head popping out from behind the pillow...

I guess I couldn't see her at first glance because of the angle she was in and the angle of our door. What a sweetheart, she was so obedient (that time), and I was so happy to see her sleeping under my pillow!

A Lovely Visit

My last "catch-up" post with our visit from Jeff and his family.
We all had such a wonderful time being with Jeff, Amy, Kayla and Jocelyn! It was our first time meeting Jocelyn and she was such a sweet girl to be around. She makes everyone smile and want to give her hugs! We love her so much! Kayla is always fun to be around! She has lots of energy and is very smart! She amazes everyone!
Hali'a especially LOVED spending time with her two cousins! Since they left she has asked for both of them everyday!

Laguna Beach

Yep, another trip to the beach. It was a nice hot day but when we got to Laguna Beach the water was FREEZING! Seriously, after having it wash up and down my ankles my feet, especially my toes, were sore!
It was fun though because we got to be out in the sun and have fun on the sand!

Jeff and Jon jumped into the ocean a few times and came running back out because it was so cold but then they dug a little pool and after a few minutes the water warmed up.

Seal Beach, California. Unfortunately we weren't able to find parking on a Saturday at Huntington Beach so we went to Seal Beach. The water was cold and it was very windy but it was nice to be out and about!

Hali'a has been absolutely blessed with wonderful grandparents! She absolutely loves each one of them and is so happy to see all of them!

Did any one ask for kitchen help?? Well, if they like it or not, they get it from Hali'a! She loves participating with food prep and cooking at Bumpa and Grammy's house! We LOVE our little helper!!

Even though Nanz and Papa are all the way in Hawaii Hali'a gets to chat with them online quite a lot. She absolutely loves to talk to them on the phone and hearing their voice or seeing them on the computer. When she's playing on her toy phone she always calls Nanz and Papa (or occasionally some dude named "Kevin).

On August 2, 2010 Jon and I celebrated our 3rd anniversary since being married in the Laie, Hawaii temple. It has passed by so quickly and we've been so blessed over these past 3 years.
To celebrate we bought Corrine Baily Ray and Norah Jones concert tickets. The concert was at Griffith Park at the LA Observatory. Absolutely gorgeous scenery!
It was fun to be at the concert because I LOVE Norah Jones but it was so much fun to spend time together.

I was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus in August 2008, while I was around 23 weeks pregnant. "SLE" is a chronic, inflammatory autoimmune disorder which can affect the skin, joints, kidneys, and other organs. Because it is an autoimmune disorder, this means there is a problem with my body's normal immune system response. Normally, the immune system helps protect the body from harmful substances. But with an autoimmune disease, my immune system can't tell the difference between harmful substances and healthy ones. The result is an overactive immune response that attacks otherwise healthy cells and tissue.

While in my womb, Hali'a's heart was attacked by the antibodies in my body and that is the reason she has a pacemaker. Hali'a has congenital heart block. The chambers of her heart cannot communicate with each other and cannot properly coordinate the pumping of her blood. The pacemaker does the communicating for her which allows her to live a pretty normal life.

Although there are many symptoms associated with this disorder, the ones the affect me include Arthritis, fatigue, joint pain and swelling, muscle aches, pleurisy, sensitivity to sunlight, hair loss & numbness.

Since being diagnosed, I've been off and on a variety of inflammation medications to help control the symptoms of this disorder, since there isn't a cure for it. Some medications have worked, some haven't, as far as easing the pain and helping with the fatigue and hair loss. About a month ago I was not taking any medications because I was feeling well. After my blood test results came back with a high inflammation rate, my Rheumatologist put me on very high doses of steroids and other medications to bring the inflammation down. I've been taking those high dosage medications for a whole month and the pain and symptoms only seemed to get worse. The high steroid dosage "helped" me gain weight and gave me a "moon face" and my joints seemed to hurt every day. After taking another blood test and seeing my Rheumatologist again to check if the inflammation went down, he said it got worse and took me off of all medications.

It's been pretty much a roller coaster when it comes to drugs and pain. I'm trying to be positive through it all, but sometimes it's just hard to keep up with Hali'a when I'm always tired and my muscles and joints hurt. Jon will jump in and take over play time when he sees that I'm having trouble though so that's been good. He's a great husband and father for our family. I'm hoping that things will just be okay with the pain killers I take instead of the steroids and anti-inflammatory drugs I was taking.

I just find it crazy that I've had two medical issues in my life that I can "blame" on my Asian heritage. I know that people of other nationalities get both of those disease/disorder, but my doctors told me that both is very common in Asian females. Don't get me wrong, I am glad and appreciative for my Asian blood, but Kawasaki Syndrome AND Lupus, that's pushing it, right?

The summer has gotten off to an amazing start this year! Seminary is done for Jon so he's been enjoying the sleep he's getting in the mornings. ROAD TRIP!!

A few weekends ago our little family decided to go hiking. We got ready, packed lunches and headed off north on the 40 minute drive to the hiking grounds. Unfortunately, when we got to the hiking ground roads, it had been closed down due to the recent mud slides. So, after turning around Jon and I talked about what things we could do or where else we could hike. Jokingly I said, "let's go to San Francisco" right away he took a quick left onto another freeway ramp and we were heading north again.

We were trying to be spontaneous.

After a couple of hours on the road we decided not to go all the way to San Francisco, but we'd stop at a beach Jon knew of that we would be able to go camping on.

On our way we stopped at Cool Hand Luke's. Jon had a steak, I had some ribs and Hali'a had...well, just about everything we had.

To make a long story shorter...we didn't make it to the camping grounds, but we did stop at Pismo beach. We got to drive our car on the sand too. Jon says it's the only place in California that you can do that so that was cool. Hali'a loved it cause we let her stand up in the car while we drove on the beach. She watched the waves and all the birds eating crabs on the sand.

On the other side of the beach are sand dunes. Very, very fun!! We got to see people in pipe buggies and 4-wheelers and dirt bikes riding on the beach and the dunes. Even little children had their own beach machines that were just right for their size!

That night we found a nearby motel...yes, motel. I wasn't too excited. In fact, I was pretty much scared because I watched that stupid movie 'Vacancy'. Which is about a guy and a girl being murdered in their motel room. The movie starts off with them arriving at the motel then finding videos of others being murdered in the same motel room which freaks them out. Anyway, bad movie; I wouldn't recommend it, but I was still a little freaked out about it.

First of all, the motel was small, not well lit, and was a little old and scary looking. When we went to check into a room, an older guy came out and was missing a finger and some teeth!! THOSE, TO ME, ARE WARNING SIGNS THAT THINGS MIGHT NOT BE TOO GOOD IN HIS LIFE AND HE MIGHT BE A LITTLE BITTER ABOUT HOW THINGS ARE GOING.

So, like a dummy, as soon as we were in the room I checked for murder videos...yes, I'm very easy to scare. Jon was laughing at me pretty much the whole night we were there. I even slept with the light on! Well, I say 'slept' but I had one eye open! That night our toilet was plugged. Not very fun! But, in the morning, after checking out we ate at this little breakfast place that was sooooo yummy!

We got a few things from Walmart for the drive home and was south bound for Orange county.

On our drive home Hali'a wasn't too excited about riding in the car seat so we tried to distract her with pictures, food, toys and books...

We had a fun, spontaneous weekend adventure. I think we want to go back there again...maybe next time we'll tell Jon's cousin, Joe and his wife Lani and son, Zealand to meet us there and we can go camping and ride on the sand dunes:)

NURSURY TIME!!

Hali'a went to nursery for the first time this past Sunday and was such a great girl about it...but we knew she was going to be since she's always happy and so friendly!

She didn't cry for us once!

I took her to the nursery door, let her in and she said, "bye-bye" and never looked back!

We are so proud of our beautiful growing daughter!

We dressed up for the special occasion in white, black and purple...

Hali'a is so funny. She has all these facial expressions that are priceless. So many people tell me to put her in movies or on magazine covers, but I guess I just don't know how to get started in that! Since I'm not doing anything this summer, I think I just might try it out.
